EDITORIAL Projects

Since my college days working for The Red & Black, the student newspaper at the University of Georgia, I've spent the better part of my career managing editorial projects and publications both in print and online. 

For the past 10 years, my primary goal has been to apply the sensibilities and rigor of a traditional editorial newsroom to the digital media sphere. This means understanding writing, reporting, copyediting, and fact checking, while having an eye for visual layouts and appreciating the business objectives of a media outlet. In other words, using the skills and vision of an Editor-in-Chief. Here are just a few of the many sites I’ve managed in recent years.

Nike Buying Guides

At Nike, we developed a library of helpful guides to provide tips and in-depth and information for consumers shopping for popular products. Collectively, Nike Buying Guides drove hundreds of thousands of monthly visitors to Nike.com from organic search, often leading to increased purchases that generated millions of dollars in annual incremental demand.

Nike Product Stories

To complemented our non-branded content strategy focused on tips and advice, we also rolled out branded product features, focused on highlighting new Nike and Jordan product releases. Content featured quotes from designers and product line managers, original photography and videos, and exclusive insights not available anywhere else. Articles generated massive viral growth and earned media via third party press pickups and mentions.

Mania.com

For five years, I was the Editor-in-Chief of Mania.com, an online magazine (at one time Cinescape magazine and formerly part of Fandom) for fans of sci-fi, fantasy, horror and genre entertainment. The site covered movies, video games, and comic book culture and regularly received over 1 Million monthly visitors. 

ALAS and Capitulo 2

I co-founded a non-profit scholarship program (ALAS) and later an international internship program (Capitulo 2), which together were dedicated to helping young people pursue international education, work, and adventure. For several years on these websites, I wrote, assigned, edited, and curated content on topics ranging from self-improvement and creativity to travel and business.  

Ruckus by Razorfish

A product of Razorfish, Ruckus was a digital platform dedicated to telling the unsung success stories of innovation in the Southeastern United States. As the project lead, my mission was to create content to generate awareness, collaboration, and creativity in the region.  


COPYWRITING

Good copy is more than just clever word-smithing, though that's nothing to underestimate. At the heart of any respectable digital content lies an essential truth or insight. The name of the game is discovering this truth, and then using it to achieve your mission. My philosophy is that to write copy well, you need to do two simple but critical things:

  1. Know what you're talking about.

  2. Free yourself from the trappings of convention and expectation.

The former means studying your audience, understanding the business objective, adhering to appropriate voice and tone, and working closely with visual and user experience designers to make language at one with the art. The latter takes practice, understanding your craft and, if possible, inspiration (coffee? whiskey?)...

 Video & Multimedia

Over the past decade, I've worked on a wide range of video and audio production projects, taking on activities such as creative direction, scriptwriting, editing, voiceover recording, and content strategy. I've worked extensively with video production teams and photographers to capture top-notch content in support of telling stories digitally, including experimenting with vertical and mobile video, drone cameras, and extensive video editing and publishing on social platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook.
